Other Stuff Exists

Don't get too comfortable with the familiar–other stuff exists, so go explore!

Friendship is Magic

The My Little Pony franchise started in 1983 with a line of toys, a spinoff of the much less popular My Pretty Pony toy. The success of the toy line led Hasbro to produce a television special in 1984, simply called My Little Pony, though later titled Rescue at Midnight Castle when the continued popularity of the toys led to further cartoons being produced. The second such television special was My Little Pony: Escape from Catrina, released in 1985. For its third animated outing, Hasbro released an animated film, My Little Pony: The Movie, in 1986. Following the TV specials and films were two television series (My Little Pony ‘n Friends in 1986 and My Little Pony Tales in 1992) and a number of direct-to-video cartoons.

In 2010, Hasbro produced a re-imagined My Little Pony cartoon series, developed for television by Lauren Faust, who had previously worked on The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. She aimed to create a My Little Pony cartoon that was of high quality and that could appeal to more than just the young girls who were the target audience for the toy line and previous cartoons.

By any measure, this series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was a great success. The series gained a large online following from a periphery demographic of men who had never before been interested in either the My Little Pony toys or cartoons.

That’s enough of a history lesson. Since the show is aimed at children, I’ll look at the effectiveness and appropriateness of the lessons in addition to my usual concern with plot and characterization.
